J oshua Harris has abandoned his Christian faith, news that marks another blow to American conservative evangelicalism. Harris authored the best-selling I Kissed Dating Goodbye in his early twenties, unleashing unnecessary angst on a generation of evangelical teens. In his early thirties, he served as pastor of a Gaithersburg megachurch. Now, he has denounced his famous book, announced he and his wife are separating, and repudiated Christianity. While Harris seems to be making a clean break with his past, the style of his apostasy announcement is oddly consistent with the evangelical Christianity he used to represent. He revealed he was leaving the faith with a social media post, which included a mood photograph of himself contemplating a beautiful lake. Life, it would seem, continues as performance art. In a sense, that is exactly how and why the YRR was so successful: savvy harnessing of fashionable idioms and marketing strategies, exceptionally clever use of social media, large and well-organized conferences, and professional-grade websites—all fronted by attractive personalities and brilliant communicators.

Note: I originally wrote this post a few weeks ago, in partial response to everything that was going on at Mars Hill. However, the issues at Mars Hill pertain to many crucial biblical principles that are relevant and important for us all. While the initial impetus for the article was what was happening at Mars Hill, this article chiefly seeks to outline those broader, universal principles of leadership in the church that are applicable to us all and crucial for all of us to come to understand better.
I think the root issue is different from what almost anybody has said so far. It goes to the issue of how a wrong view of leadership can lead even people with good intent to do great harm. Recent controversies in the evangelical world have shown that Protestants are not immune to falling into an unbiblical understanding of the nature of pastoral and elder authority.
This is why it is especially important to understand what the Bible actually teaches regarding the role of elders and the nature of their authority. But few people, in my observation, understand what that actually means. Often, people think that not domineering simply means leading for the good of others, rather than your own gain. That is certainly part of it, but there is more.

Feminism is the belief that all genders should have equal rights and opportunities. Inside of those words is a dizzying world of academic and social discussion, intersections of injustice and oppressions, conversations about race and gender and toxic masculinity and benevolent sexism and ableism and heteronormativity. Feminism is more than just the belief that men and women are equal, but how men and women and other genders live.
Feminists are dedicated to dismantling the systemic oppressions that affect women, especially the ones that we all tend to be unconscious of. We point to ways that whole career fields are hostile to women. We examine how gender roles and stereotypes affect all of us, no matter our gender, and how our communities police these things in sometimes brutal ways.
